FIVE ROASTS OF TRIPLE-CERTIFIED COFFEE
Changing the World a Cup at a Time!
What is Triple-Certified Coffee?
First, it is shade grown. The beans are cultivated in the understory of the rainforest, which not only preserves these magnificent, environmentally important ecosystems, but also protects the migratory bird populations that depend upon them, while supporting farmers in practicing sustainable farming methods.
Second, it is organic. The beans are clean". No chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used in their cultivation, which sustains and protects the rivers and fragile soils of the rainforests and causes no harm to the farm workers or the local people who depend on the water and products of the rainforests.
Third, it is fairly traded. Fair Trade certification assures that farmers recieve a fair price for their product. There is much information about Fiar Trade and the good it is doing at www.fairtradefederation.org
Imagine if we all started drinking triple-certifice coffee. It certainly could have an amazing, far-reaching impact on both the environmental and social well-being of coffee producing regions, which would only help the whole world.
Come in and we'll give you a fresh cup to sample and enjoy while you shop!

FAIR TRADE ORGANIC CHOCOLATE
75% of America's is grown and harvested in the Ivory Coast where 15,000 child-slaves work on chocolate plantations (an estimate provided by the U.S. State Department). These children have been kidnapped or sold by their parents to work from age 8 at the grueling job of cutting cocoa pods from trees and processing them often under cruel treatment that is used to force production. Across Africia, children are made to work with deadly chemicals: protective garments and proper training are not provided. Chocolate that you eat every day is grown and harvested in this way.
Fair Trade certification guarantees that you are not an unwitting participant in this inhumane situation and assists in mending the economic disparity that has created it. BESIDES, IT'S DELICIOUS!

Idling Gets you Nowhere: a green-tip from the Union of Conderned Scientists
Would you drive a car that gets zero miles to the gallon? Of course not. Yet that is your mileage whenever your engine idles. Idling wastes money and fuel, contributes to air pollution, and generates carbon dioxide emissions that cause global warming. Some states even have laws limiting the amount oftime cars can idle. Unfortunately, many people still believe that idling is necessary or even beneficial- a false perception that has carried over from the 1970s and 1980s, when engines needed time to warm up (especially in colder temperatures). Fuel-injection vehicles, which have been the norm since the mid-1980s, can be restarted frequently without engine damage and need no more than 30 seconds to warm up even on winter days.
In fact, idling longer than that could actually damage your engine in the long term. Because an idling engine is not operating at its peak temperature, the fuel does not completly combust, leaving residues in the engine that can contaminate engine oil and make spark plugs dirty. Excessive idling also allows water to dondense in the behicle's exhaust, contribution to corrosion of the exhaust system.
No matter what time of year, minimize your idling with the following tips:
-
When first starting your car, idle for not more than 30 seconds.
-
Except when sitting in traffic, turn your engine off if you must wait in your car for more than 30 seconds. You can still operate the radio and windows without the engine running.
-
When the time comes to buy a new car, consider a hyrid. Hybrid gasoline-electric vehicles switch off the engine and use gattery power for accessories when the car is not moving, effectively eliminating idling.
That's it for now!
